What to Expect During Your First HBOT Session

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is one of the most powerful regenerative tools we offer at Zen — but I understand that the idea of sitting in a pressurized chamber can be intimidating for first-timers. As the Director of Clinical Operations who has supervised hundreds of HBOT sessions, here's exactly what you can expect from your first visit.

Before Your Session

You'll arrive at our clinic and change into comfortable clothing (cotton is preferred — no synthetic materials, lotions, or fragrances are allowed in the chamber for safety). We'll review your medical history, check your ear and sinus health, and walk you through the entire process. No preparation or fasting is required, though we recommend eating a light meal beforehand and staying well-hydrated.

The Pressurization Phase (0-10 minutes)

As the chamber pressurizes, you'll feel increasing pressure in your ears — similar to what you experience during airplane descent. This is completely normal. We'll teach you equalization techniques: swallowing, yawning, or the Valsalva maneuver (gently blowing with nose pinched). Most patients find equalization becomes second nature after their first session.

The chamber reaches treatment pressure — typically 1.5 to 2.0 ATA (atmospheres absolute) — within 8-10 minutes. You'll know you're at full pressure when the ear sensations stop and you feel a sense of calm stillness.

The Treatment Phase (60-90 minutes)

This is where the magic happens. At treatment pressure, your blood plasma becomes supersaturated with dissolved oxygen — up to 10-15 times normal levels. This oxygen-rich blood reaches areas that red blood cells cannot easily access: healing wounds, recovering tissues, and inflamed joints.

During this phase, most patients simply relax. You can watch content on your phone, listen to music or podcasts, meditate, or sleep. Many of our patients tell me it becomes their favorite "quiet time" of the week. The chamber is spacious, well-lit, and equipped with communication controls.

The Depressurization Phase (5-10 minutes)

The chamber slowly returns to normal atmospheric pressure. You may feel slight warmth and a popping sensation in your ears. The process is gradual and comfortable.

After Your Session

Many patients report immediate effects: increased energy, a sense of mental clarity, and what we call "oxygen euphoria" — a noticeable feeling of well-being that comes from flooding your tissues with therapeutic-level oxygen. There's no downtime or recovery period. You can drive, work out, and continue your day normally.

The real benefits of HBOT compound over multiple sessions. We typically recommend protocols of 10-40 sessions depending on your treatment goals — whether that's post-surgical recovery, concussion management, performance optimization, or chronic wound healing.

Pricing
